Ann Swisshelm (born March 9, 1968) is a talented curler from Chicago, USA. She is also known as Ann Swisshelm Silver. Ann has represented the United States in the Winter Olympic Games twice. She competed in Salt Lake City (2002) and Sochi (2014). She has won many awards and medals throughout her long career in curling.

Ann Swisshelm's Curling Career

Ann Swisshelm started curling when she was ten years old. She learned to play at the Exmoor Country Club near Chicago.

National Championships

Ann first competed in the U.S. National Championship in 1995. Her team finished in fifth place that year. She has competed in the National Championships 18 more times since then. Her team won the National title five times. These wins were in 1998, 2001, 2003, 2010, and 2013.

World Championships

Ann's first time at the World Championships was in 1998. Her team finished tied for eighth place. In 2001, her team improved to fifth place.

Her best performance at the World Championships was in 2003. Team USA finished third in the first round of games. In the semifinals, they beat Team Sweden. This win allowed them to play in the final game against Canada. Playing in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Ann's team defeated the Canadians. This victory earned Ann her first World Championship gold medal! She returned to the World Championships two more times, in 2010 and 2013. However, she did not win another medal in those years.

Olympic Games Appearances

Ann Swisshelm competed in her first Olympic Games in 2002. Team United States finished third after the first round of games. In the semifinals, the U.S. team lost to Switzerland. In the bronze medal match, they played against Canada. Canada won the match, and Ann's team finished without a medal.

Ann tried to qualify for the next two Olympics. She finished second in the U.S. Olympic Trials both times.

In 2014, Ann and her team qualified for the Olympics again. They won the U.S. Olympic Curling Trials. At the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Ann's team finished with one win and eight losses.

Awards and Recognition

Ann Swisshelm has received several awards for her curling achievements:

  • 2001 & 2014: United States Olympic Committee Female Curler of the Year.
  • 2003 & 2013: United States Olympic Committee Curling Team of the Year.
  • 2001: Frances Brodie Award Winner. This is a sportsmanship award from the World Curling Federation.
  • 2008: Ann Brown Sportsmanship Award at the U.S. Nationals.

Ann Swisshelm was born in Middletown, Ohio. She now lives in Chicago with her husband, Sean Silver. Ann studied at Drake University and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
