Ann Swisshelm (born March 9, 1968) is a talented curler from Chicago. She has represented the United States in two Olympic Games. Ann competed in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and the 2014 Sochi Olympics. She is also known by her married name, Ann Swisshelm Silver.

Ann Swisshelm's Curling Journey

Ann Swisshelm started playing curling when she was ten years old. She learned the sport at the Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Illinois. This club is located in a suburb of Chicago.

National Championships Success

Ann first competed in the U.S. National Championship in 1995. Her team finished in fifth place that year. She went on to compete in the National Championships 18 more times. Her team won the National title five times. These wins happened in 1998, 2001, 2003, 2010, and 2013.

World Championship Highlights

Ann Swisshelm's first time at the World Curling Championships was in 1998. Her team tied for eighth place. In 2001, her team improved, finishing fifth with a 5–4 record.

Her best performance at the World Championships was in 2003. Team USA finished third in the first round of games. They then beat Team Sweden in the semifinals. This win allowed them to play against Colleen Jones's Canadian team in the final. Playing in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Ann's team defeated the Canadians. This victory earned Swisshelm her first World Championship medal. She competed in the World Championships two more times, in 2010 and 2013. However, she did not win another medal in those years.

Olympic Appearances

Ann Swisshelm competed in her first Olympic Games in 2002. Team United States finished third after the first round of games. They had a record of 6 wins and 3 losses. In the semifinals, the U.S. team lost to Switzerland. Switzerland went on to win the silver medal. In the match for the bronze medal, Ann's team played against Kelley Law's team from Canada. Canada won that match with a score of 9–5, taking the bronze medal. After the 2002 Olympics, Ann competed in the next two U.S. Olympic Trials. She finished second both times.

Swisshelm and her team qualified for the U.S. Olympic Curling Trials again in 2014. They finished first in the round robin standings. They then defeated Allison Pottinger in a best-of-three series to earn their spot in the Olympics. At the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Ann's team finished with a record of 1 win and 8 losses.

Ann Swisshelm has received several awards for her curling achievements:

  • 2001 & 2014: United States Olympic Committee Female Curler of the Year
  • 2003 & 2013: United States Olympic Committee Curling Team of the Year
  • 2001: Frances Brodie Award Winner – This is a Sportsmanship Award from the World Curling Federation.
  • 2008: Ann Brown Sportsmanship Award – Received at the U.S. Nationals.

Ann Swisshelm was born in Middletown, Ohio. She now lives in Chicago with her husband, Sean Silver. Ann studied at Drake University and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
