Becoming Anna Kashfi
When Joan O'Callaghan was 22, she changed her name to Anna Kashfi. She became a model and actress. She and Glyn Mortimer, who ran a modeling agency in London, created the name "Anna Kashfi."
Mortimer said that "Kashfi" was the name of a friend of his. Joan chose "Anna" from "Joanna," a name she sometimes used.
Her parents always said she was their biological daughter. They stated she was born to them in India in 1934.
However, when she married Marlon Brando in 1957, she listed different parents on her marriage license. She said her father was Devi Kashfi and her mother was Selma Ghose. Despite this, her original parents insisted she was their child.
Before becoming an actress, Joan worked as a waitress and in a butcher's shop in Cardiff. Later, she moved to London and became a model.
