Anna of the North is the stage name for Anna Lotterud, a singer and songwriter from Gjøvik, Norway. She was born on June 8, 1989. Her music is often described as "soft, soul-baring electro-pop." This means it's electronic music with a dreamy, emotional feel.

Anna of the North started as a music duo in 2014 with producer Brady Daniell-Smith. They released their first album, Lovers, in 2017. Brady left the group in 2018, but Anna Lotterud continued making music under the same name. Her second album, Dream Girl, came out in 2019.

Early life

Anna Lotterud grew up in a small town in Norway called Gjøvik. Her father was a musician, so music was a part of her life from a young age. Before she became a full-time musician, Anna studied graphic design. Later, she moved to Melbourne, Australia, to continue her studies.

Music career

While studying in Melbourne, Anna met a New Zealand music producer named Brady Daniell-Smith. They decided to work together and formed the duo "Anna of the North." Anna sang the songs, and Brady created the music.

In June 2014, they released their very first song, "Sway." It quickly became popular online and helped them get a record deal in the United States. Even famous DJs like The Chainsmokers made their own version of "Sway" in September 2014.

After "Sway," they released more songs like "The Dreamer" and "Baby." These songs also did very well online. They even got to open for the popular DJ Kygo on his tour across Europe. Anna of the North then released "Us" and "Oslo," which were also well-received by music critics.

In May 2017, Anna of the North announced their first album, Lovers. The album's title song, "Lovers," was released as a single. Anna shared that this song was inspired by a past relationship that ended. She said that even though it was sad, the song still has a hopeful message about the future. The album Lovers came out on September 8, 2017.

In July 2017, Anna worked with the famous rapper Tyler, the Creator on his album Flower Boy. She sang on his songs "Boredom" and "911 / Mr. Lonely." Anna was even invited to perform these songs on a TV show called The Late Show with Stephen Colbert with Tyler, the Creator and Steve Lacy.

In 2018, Brady Daniell-Smith decided to leave the duo. They separated on good terms. Anna Lotterud continued her music journey as Anna of the North.

Her second album, Dream Girl, was released on October 25, 2019. The song "Dream Girl" from this album was later used in an iPad Pro commercial in 2020. In October 2020, she released a shorter collection of songs called an EP, titled Believe. She also released the single "Here's To Another" in 2021.
