Steve Thomas Lacy-Moya (born May 23, 1998) is an American singer, songwriter, and music producer. He also plays many instruments. Steve Lacy first became known as the guitarist for the band The Internet, which he joined in 2015.
His first collection of songs, called Steve Lacy's Demo (2017), was made by himself and became very popular. After that, he worked with famous artists like Frank Ocean and Tyler, the Creator on the song "911 / Mr. Lonely". This song sold millions of copies. He also helped write songs for Solange Knowles and Kendrick Lamar, including Lamar's song "Pride".
Steve Lacy's first full album, Apollo XXI (2019), was nominated for a Grammy Award. He also appeared on songs by Vampire Weekend and Calvin Harris. In 2022, he released his second album, Gemini Rights, which became a top-ten album in the U.S. The song "Bad Habit" from this album became a huge hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart after becoming popular on TikTok. "Bad Habit" was nominated for several Grammy Awards, and Steve Lacy won a Grammy for Gemini Rights as the Best Progressive R&B Album. In 2023, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Steve Lacy's Early Life
Steve Thomas Lacy-Moya was born in Compton, California, on May 23, 1998. His mother is African-American and his father was Filipino. He grew up with his mother and sister, Asia Lacy. His father was not often around and passed away when Steve was 10 years old.
Steve went to Narbonne High School and then a private school. He has shared that his mother tried to keep him and his sisters safe from some of the challenges in Compton at that time.
His Music Career
Steve Lacy first became interested in playing the guitar when he was seven. This happened after he played the video game Guitar Hero. Soon, he wanted to learn how to play a real guitar. In high school, he met Jameel Bruner in their jazz band. Jameel later became his bandmate in The Internet.
Steve started making his first songs on his iPhone. He used a special plug-in for his guitar called an iRig. In 2013, he began helping to produce songs for The Internet's album, Ego Death. This album was nominated for a Grammy Award. After this, members of The Internet started working on their own projects. Steve Lacy also produced songs for many other artists, including Kendrick Lamar's song "Pride".
His first solo collection, Steve Lacy's Demo, came out on February 17, 2017. Steve made most of these songs on his iPhone. He recorded guitar and bass parts through it and sang into its microphone. He also created drum patterns using a computer program called Ableton Live. That same year, he helped write and produce music for Ravyn Lenae. He then worked with The Internet again on their album Hive Mind, released in 2018. Steve also produced music for Solange, Kali Uchis, and Mac Miller.
By 2018, Steve Lacy started using more than just his phone to make music. In March 2019, he produced two songs on Solange's album When I Get Home. He also appeared on the Vampire Weekend song "Sunflower" and its music video. In April, he released "N Side," a song from his first album, Apollo XXI. The album came out on May 24, 2019, and was nominated for a Grammy Award.
On December 4, 2020, Steve Lacy released The Lo-Fis, which was a collection of his earlier works. His song "Mercury" came out with a music video on June 16, 2022. His second album, Gemini Rights, was released on July 15, 2022. The song "Bad Habit" from this album became his first song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This happened after a short part of the song became very popular on TikTok. On November 5, 2022, he performed "Bad Habit" and "Helmet" on the TV show Saturday Night Live.
In January 2023, it was announced that Steve Lacy would be one of the main performers at the new Re:SET Concert Series.

Steve Lacy has mentioned several artists who have greatly influenced his music. These include Thundercat, Erykah Badu, Pharrell Williams, and Prince. He also looks up to bands like Weezer and Paramore, and guitar legend Jimi Hendrix.
His music has been described as "electrifying yet smooth" and a "playful mix of beachy funk, rock 'n roll-sprinkled soul." He has also said that when it comes to producing music, Mac DeMarco is a big inspiration. Steve Lacy feels most comfortable writing songs about love and relationships.
