Annabella (born Suzanne Georgette Charpentier) was a famous French actress. She appeared in 46 films between 1927 and 1952. She even starred in some Hollywood movies during the late 1930s and 1940s.
Life and Career
Annabella was born in Paris, France, on July 14, 1907. Her chance to become an actress came when a film producer visited her father. She got a small part in a classic movie called Napoléon (1927).
She became well-known after starring in René Clair's film Le Million (1931). Over the next ten years, she became one of France's most popular movie stars. In 1936, she won an award for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her role in Veille d'armes (1935).

Annabella also starred in a British film called Wings of the Morning (1937) with Henry Fonda. Later, she went to America to work for 20th Century Fox. She appeared in the movie Suez (1938) alongside Loretta Young and Tyrone Power.
Annabella and Tyrone Power fell in love, and their romance was often written about in movie magazines. The head of 20th Century Fox, Darryl F. Zanuck, didn't want his big star, Tyrone Power, to get married. He offered Annabella a deal to make more movies overseas. But she didn't want to leave Power.
After finishing Suez, Annabella went back to France to get a divorce from her husband at the time, Jean Murat. She and Tyrone Power got married on April 23, 1939. They went to Rome for their honeymoon.
A few months later, Annabella and Power flew back to Europe to bring Annabella's mother to live with them. Sadly, her brother died during the war. Annabella also made another trip to bring her daughter, Anne, from France to live with them. Tyrone Power adopted Anne before he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1942. Anne Power later married actor Oskar Werner.
Even though Annabella had a contract with 20th Century-Fox, Darryl F. Zanuck was upset that she married Tyrone Power. So, he didn't give her many movie roles. Annabella and Power did appear together in a play called Liliom. While Power was serving in the war, Annabella acted in a play called Blithe Spirit in Chicago. In 1944, she received great reviews for her work in the play Jacobowsky and the Colonel on Broadway.
When Tyrone Power returned from the war, they tried to make their marriage work again. Annabella started acting in films once more, playing the main female role in 13 Rue Madeleine (1947) with James Cagney. Annabella and Power divorced in 1948, and Annabella moved back to France.
She appeared in a Spanish film called Don Juan (1950). Her last film was released in 1952. After appearing on a TV show called Suspense in 1954, she stopped acting.
Annabella and Tyrone Power remained very good friends. After Power divorced his next wife, he tried to get back together with Annabella. He told her he had made a big mistake by letting her go. However, Annabella decided not to get back together.
Annabella passed away in 1996 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, at the age of 89. She was buried in Passy Cemetery in Haute-Savoie, France.
