The Mall's Early Days and Growth
Before the mall was built, this area was a train station called "Best Gate." This station was part of an electric railway. The name "Best Gate" is still used for a nearby road today.
In the 1970s, a store called Montgomery Ward stood alone here. The Annapolis Mall first opened its doors in 1980. Montgomery Ward became one of its main stores. Other big stores like Garfinckel's and Hecht's also opened. In 1983, JCPenney joined the mall.
The mall grew bigger over the years. Garfinckel's closed in 1990. In 1994, Nordstrom and a larger food court were added. A Lord & Taylor store and a movie theater opened in 1998. Montgomery Ward closed in 2001 and was replaced by Sears in 2002. Hecht's became Macy's in 2006.
Big Changes and New Stores
A major expansion happened in 2007. This added many new stores, including Pottery Barn and H&M. The mall continued to change. Borders Books and Music closed in 2011. Forever 21 opened in that spot in 2013, but it closed in April 2025.
Lord & Taylor closed its store in 2018. The mall's owner, Westfield Group, was bought by another company that year. In 2020, Nordstrom also closed its Annapolis location.
Community Hub and Recent Updates
The mall became more than just a place to shop. In April 2018, the Anne Arundel County Public Library opened a temporary branch there. It moved to a permanent spot in February 2020. This library even has a Community Pantry that helps families. In August 2025, the library expanded its space further.
In September 2020, an animal shelter called "Paws at the Mall" opened. It was the first animal shelter inside a shopping mall. In April 2022, the movie theater became an AMC Annapolis Mall 11.
JCPenney closed its store in August 2025. This space is planned to welcome new businesses soon.
New Ownership and Future Plans
In 2024, the mall got new owners, Centennial Real Estate Management and Atlas Hill RE. After this, the mall changed its name back to Annapolis Mall.
New and exciting additions are planned for the mall. Dick's House of Sport and Dave & Buster's are expected to open in 2026 and 2027. The former Sears store is planned to become a mix of shops and apartments. Other new stores like a Tesla dealership, Uniqlo, and Jack and Jones are also expected to open in 2026.
In November 2025, New Village Academy announced plans to open a charter school in the mall. It is expected to welcome students in the fall of 2026.
