A Look at the Semple House

What Style Is It?

The Semple House was built between 1899 and 1901. It was designed in the Beaux-Arts architectural style. This style was popular around that time. It showed a shift towards the classic look of the Renaissance period. This was different from the more detailed Victorian styles that came before it.

Who Lived Here First?

The first owner of this impressive house was Frank Semple. He was a successful businessman. Frank Semple was a partner in a company called Janney, Semple, and Co. This company sold hardware items in large quantities to other businesses.

Special Features of the House

The Semple House has many interesting details. The main entrance is on Franklin Avenue. It has a grand porch with a balustrade, which is a fancy railing. The porch is supported by Ionic columns. These columns have a special scroll-like design at the top.

Outside Details

You can also see a detailed Palladian window on the house. This type of window has a large arch in the middle. It also has two smaller rectangular windows on each side. There is also a rounded bay area. This part of the house sticks out in a curved shape.

Inside the Mansion

The inside of the Semple House is just as grand. When you step inside, you enter a reception hall. This hall has beautiful mahogany wood paneling on the walls. The floor is made of hardwood. It has special marble designs built into it. The ceiling of the hall is frescoed. This means it has paintings done directly onto the plaster.

The house also has a very large living room. It is about 1,000 square feet in size. There is even a ballroom! This was a special room used for dancing and parties.

What Is It Used For Today?
