Annika Falkengren was born on April 12, 1962, in Bangkok, Thailand. Her parents were diplomats for the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This means they worked for the Swedish government in another country.
She later moved back to Sweden for her schooling. She attended the Sigtunaskolan Humanistiska Läroverket boarding school. After that, she went to Stockholm University. In 1987, she earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Economics.

Annika Falkengren started her career at SEB in 1987. She joined the bank's special training program for new graduates. She worked her way up through many different jobs. Most of her roles were in the bank's capital markets business. This part of the bank deals with buying and selling stocks and bonds.
In 2005, she became the President and CEO of SEB. She held this important position until 2017. Then, she left SEB to join Lombard Odier. There, she became a Managing Partner. She worked in this role until December 2023.
