Anthony Bate (born August 31, 1927 – died June 19, 2012) was a talented English actor. He was known for his many roles in television, film, and theatre.
He is perhaps most famous for playing Oliver Lacon in the BBC TV shows Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People. These were based on popular spy novels. He also played Bret Renssalaer in the Game, Set and Match series.

Early Life and Training
Anthony Bate was born in Stourbridge, England. He was the third son in his family. His parents owned hotels on the Isle of Wight.
He went to King Edward VI School in Stourbridge. After school, he trained to be an actor. He studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He even won a gold medal there! Before starting his acting career, he served in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve from 1945 to 1947.
Acting on Stage
Anthony Bate began his professional acting career in the theatre in 1953. He performed in many plays throughout his life.

- His first show in London's West End was Inherit the Wind in 1960.
- He also appeared in Treasure Island and Much Ado About Nothing.
- He continued to act in plays until the 1990s.
