Professional Basketball Journey
Starting in the NBA Draft
In 1986, Anthony Bowie was chosen in the 1986 NBA draft. The Houston Rockets picked him in the third round as the 66th overall player. This happened after he finished his college career at the University of Oklahoma.
Playing in Minor Leagues and Europe
Before playing in the NBA, Bowie spent time playing in Europe and in several minor basketball leagues. He played for the Rockets in preseason games in 1986 and 1987. He also played for the New Jersey Nets during their 1988 preseason.
From 1987 to 1989, Bowie played for the Quad City Thunder. This team was part of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). In 1989, he was named the CBA Most Valuable Player. He was also chosen for the All-CBA First Team that year.
NBA Debut and Early Years
Bowie made his official NBA debut with the San Antonio Spurs in 1989. After the 1988–89 season ended, the Spurs re-signed him. They then traded him to the Houston Rockets, the team that first drafted him. He played 66 games for the Rockets during that season.
Time with the Orlando Magic
In the 1990–91 season, Bowie played in Italy for Ranger Varese. He later joined the Orlando Magic during the 1991–92 season. He stayed with the Magic for five seasons, which was his most successful period.
Bowie, along with Donald Royal, was known for bringing energy off the bench. He often guarded the best offensive players on opposing teams. He was also good at making jump shots and three-pointers. He was part of the Magic team that reached the 1995 NBA Finals.
Return to Europe and Later NBA Stint
After his time with the Magic, Bowie returned to Italy. He played for Stefanel Milano in the 1996–97 season. In January 1998, he joined the New York Knicks and played 27 games for them in the 1997–98 season.
Success in European Leagues
Bowie then went back to Europe, where he achieved great success. In 1999, he won the EuroLeague championship with the Lithuanian team Žalgiris Kaunas. He then played in the Greek Basket League for AEK Athens. With AEK Athens, he won both the FIBA Saporta Cup and the Greek Cup in 2000.
From January to June 2001, he played in Italy again for Paf Bologna. His team reached the Italian League Finals, but they lost to Kinder Bologna. After that season, he stopped playing professional basketball.
The Famous Triple-Double Game
Anthony Bowie is often remembered for a special game on March 9, 1996, against the Detroit Pistons. In that game, he achieved a triple-double, which means he had double-digit numbers in three different stats: 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
After getting a rebound from a missed free throw by Detroit, Bowie called a timeout. His coach, Brian Hill, was not happy about this. Bowie then set up a play to get his tenth assist. He caught the ball from the inbound pass and passed it to David Vaughn, who dunked the ball. This completed Bowie's triple-double.
