Anthony Calvillo (born August 23, 1972) is an American football coach and former quarterback. He is currently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Calvillo was once the all-time leader in passing yards in professional football from 2011 to 2020. He still holds the record for the most passing yards in CFL history. During his playing career, he threw for an amazing 79,816 yards. He is also one of only a few professional quarterbacks to throw over 400 touchdown passes. His passing yards record was later broken by Drew Brees in 2020.

He won three Grey Cup championships as a player in 2002, 2009, and 2010. He was also named the Grey Cup Most Valuable Player in 2002. Calvillo won the CFL's Most Outstanding Player Award three times (in 2003, 2008, and 2009). This ties him for second place all-time for this award. Calvillo retired from playing on January 21, 2014. He then became an assistant coach for the Alouettes from 2015 to 2017 and for the Toronto Argonauts in 2018.

Early Life and Sports

Anthony Calvillo was born in Los Angeles, California. When he attended La Puente High School, he was a talented athlete in both football and basketball. He is of Mexican-American background. Calvillo grew up in a challenging home environment, and sports became a way for him to find focus and escape.

College Football Career

Calvillo played for two seasons at Mt. San Antonio College. Then, in 1992, he moved to Utah State University. After a good junior year as the starting quarterback, he had an amazing senior season in 1993. He set a school record with 3,260 total yards of offense during the regular season. He also set a school record by throwing five touchdown passes in a single game, which he did twice!

With Calvillo leading the team, Utah State won the Big West Conference championship in 1993. This was their first conference title since 1979. The Aggies ended the year with a 42–33 win over Ball State in the Las Vegas Bowl. Calvillo threw for 386 yards and three touchdowns in that game, earning him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. It was Utah State's first-ever bowl victory.

Professional Playing Career

After college, Anthony Calvillo was not chosen by an NFL team. He began his Canadian Football League career in 1994 with the Las Vegas Posse, a team that was part of the CFL's expansion into the United States.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

The Las Vegas Posse team stopped playing after just one year. Calvillo was then chosen first overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a special draft for players from the folded U.S. teams. In Hamilton, Calvillo mostly played as a backup quarterback.

In 1996, Calvillo set a Hamilton team record by throwing for 518 yards in a game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Later that year, he broke his own record by throwing for 542 yards against the Montreal Alouettes. This was the most passing yards by any player in the CFL that year.

Montreal Alouettes

In 1998, Calvillo joined the Montreal Alouettes as a free agent. This is where he became one of the most famous quarterbacks in CFL history. He led the Alouettes to the 2002 Grey Cup, which was their first championship in 25 years. In that game, he was named the Grey Cup Most Valuable Player.

During the 2003 CFL season, Calvillo broke many Montreal Alouette passing records. He completed 408 passes for 5,891 yards and 37 touchdowns. In 2004, he threw for 6,041 yards, becoming only the fourth quarterback in CFL history to pass for over 6,000 yards in a single season. He was nominated for the Most Outstanding Player award for the third year in a row.

With Calvillo as quarterback, the 2004 Alouettes became the first team in CFL history to have four players each catch for over 1,000 yards in the same season. They did this again in 2005!

The 2008 CFL season was full of milestones for Calvillo. He passed Danny McManus to become the second all-time leading passer in the CFL. He also became the fourth quarterback in league history to throw 300 career touchdown passes. Later, he became the second quarterback in CFL history to complete 4,000 career passes. With 5,633 passing yards and 43 touchdown passes, Calvillo won the 2008 Most Outstanding Player award. He led the Alouettes to the 96th Grey Cup final, but they lost to the Calgary Stampeders.

In 2009, Calvillo continued to break records. He passed Canadian Football Hall of Famer Ron Lancaster for second place in career touchdown passes. Even though he missed two games, he still threw for 4,639 yards and completed an amazing 72.0% of his passes. Calvillo led Montreal to a thrilling comeback victory in the 97th Grey Cup. They won 28–27 against the Saskatchewan Roughriders with a last-second field goal.

Calvillo won his third Grey Cup on November 28, 2010, defeating the Saskatchewan Roughriders again. He added to his record for most passing yards in Grey Cup games with 2,470 yards. He also set a record for starting in eight Grey Cup games.

After the 2010 season, Calvillo had surgery to remove a cancerous growth on his thyroid. The surgery was successful.

On July 15, 2011, Calvillo threw his 395th career touchdown pass, setting a new CFL record. On October 10, 2011, he threw a touchdown pass that made him professional football's all-time leading passer. In 2012, Calvillo became the only player in football history to pass for over 5,000 yards seven times in his career. He also reached 4,000 yards passing eleven times, which is a CFL record.

Calvillo signed a two-year contract in December 2012. In Week 8 of the 2013 CFL season, he left a game after a hit and was later diagnosed with a concussion. He missed the rest of the 2013 season.

On January 21, 2014, Anthony Calvillo announced his retirement from professional football. On October 13, 2014, the Alouettes retired his jersey number, #13, in a special ceremony. When he retired, he was the last active player who had played for a U.S.-based CFL team during the league's expansion in the mid-1990s.
