Anthony Colve was a Dutch naval captain. He was the leader of New Netherland for a short time. New Netherland is now mostly New York and New Jersey. This happened when the Dutch briefly took back control from the British.

Colve's Early Life and Military Career

Anthony Colve was likely part of a Dutch naval group. This group took back a place called Suriname from the British in 1667. After this, he became an officer cadet in 1668. He later became a captain at Fort Lillo in 1670. In 1672, he moved his troops to a town called Veere.

Leading New Netherland

The Netherlands and England were at war. This was called the Third Anglo-Dutch War. During this war, the Dutch took back New York City in 1673. The city had been under British rule for nine years.

Anthony Colve was chosen to be the new leader. He started his job on September 19, 1673. During his time as leader, New York was renamed New Orange.

However, his leadership did not last long. The war ended with the Treaty of Westminster (1674). This agreement said that New York would go back to English rule. So, Colve's time as leader ended on February 9, 1674.

Life After New Netherland

After returning to the Netherlands, Colve continued his military career. He became a sergeant-major in 1679. Later, he was a lieutenant-colonel in 1683. He was last known as a commander in Veere in 1695.

Family Life

Anthony Colve was married to Margarethe "Griton" de Quade. They had two daughters and one son. His son, Jacob Lambert Colve, became an important person in Veere. He was the mayor of the town. He was also a member of the States of Zeeland from 1717 to 1722.
