Anthony Robert Gose (born August 10, 1990) is an American professional baseball player. He is currently a pitcher and outfielder in the New York Mets organization. Anthony has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, and Cleveland Guardians. He started his career as an outfielder, playing in center field. After the 2016 season, he made a big change and became a pitcher.

Early Life and High School Sports
Anthony Gose grew up in Bellflower, California. He went to Bellflower High School. During his senior year, he was a star on the school's baseball team. He had a great batting average of .443. He also stole 31 stolen bases, showing how fast he was. Anthony could also pitch, throwing the ball as fast as 97 miles per hour.
Besides baseball, Gose was also a talented track and field athlete. He ran in sprint races like the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. He also competed in relay races. He even got a scholarship to play college baseball at the University of Arizona.
Baseball Career Journey
Starting in the Minor Leagues
The Philadelphia Phillies picked Anthony Gose in the second round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. He decided to sign with the Phillies instead of going to college. He received a signing bonus of $772,000.
In 2009, playing for the Lakewood BlueClaws, he was chosen for the All-Star Game. That season, he led all minor league players with an amazing 76 stolen bases! He continued to play well in 2010 for the Clearwater Threshers.
Joining the Toronto Blue Jays
In July 2010, Gose was part of a big trade. He was first traded to the Houston Astros, and then immediately to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays had wanted him for a long time.
In 2011, MLB.com said Gose was the Blue Jays' fifth-best young player. He played for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats and helped them win the Eastern League championship. He set a new team record with 70 stolen bases that year. He also hit 15 home runs.
Before the 2012 season, Gose was ranked as the 39th-best young player in all of baseball. He started the 2012 season with the Las Vegas 51s, a Triple-A team. He was even selected to play in the 2012 All-Star Futures Game.
Making it to Major League Baseball
Anthony Gose made his MLB debut with the Toronto Blue Jays on July 17, 2012. He got his first Major League hit that day. He played in 56 games in 2012, hitting his first career home run. He also stole 15 bases.
He continued to play for the Blue Jays in 2013 and 2014, often moving between the major league team and their Triple-A team, the Buffalo Bisons.
Time with the Detroit Tigers
On November 12, 2014, Gose was traded to the Detroit Tigers. In 2015, he became the Tigers' main center fielder. He played in 140 games and stole 23 bases.
In May 2016, Gose was sent down to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. Later that year, the Tigers decided to send him to their Double-A team, the Erie SeaWolves.
In March 2017, the Tigers announced a big change for Gose. They decided to try converting him into a pitcher. He made his pitching debut in May, throwing the ball very fast, up to 99 miles per hour.
Journey as a Pitcher
After leaving the Tigers, Gose signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers in November 2017. He played in their minor league system as a pitcher.
In December 2018, Gose signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians (now known as the Cleveland Guardians). He spent 2019 pitching in their minor league system. He had a good year, with a low earned run average (ERA) and 35 strikeouts.
Gose was invited to spring training in 2020, but the minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In September 2021, the Cleveland Indians called Gose up to the major leagues as a pitcher! This was a big moment, as he had successfully changed his position. He pitched well in his first few games.
In 2022, Gose continued to pitch for the Guardians. He had a 3-0 record. However, he had to have Tommy John surgery in September, which meant he would miss a lot of time recovering.
He re-signed with the Guardians on a minor league contract to recover. In 2024, he returned to pitching in Triple-A and was called up to the Guardians' active roster multiple times.
Joining the New York Mets
On December 20, 2024, Anthony Gose signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets.
International Baseball
In May 2021, Anthony Gose was chosen to be on the United States national baseball team. This team was trying to qualify for baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. After they qualified, he was named to the Olympic roster. The team went on to win a silver medal at the Olympics, losing to Japan in the final game. Gose also played for the U.S. team in the 2024 WBSC Premier12 tournament, where they won a bronze medal.
