Anthony Stewart Head (born 20 February 1954 – died 1 June 2026) was a talented English actor and singer. He was well-known for his roles in many popular TV shows and films.

He first became famous in the UK in the 1980s for appearing in the Nescafé coffee commercials. Later, he gained international recognition as Rupert Giles in the hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He also played the Prime Minister in Little Britain, King Uther Pendragon in Merlin, and Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso. Anthony Head was also known for his deep, clear voice, which he used in many voice-over roles and advertisements.

Anthony Stewart Head was born in Camden Town, London, England, on 20 February 1954. His father, Seafield Laurence Stewart Murray Head, was a filmmaker. His mother, Helen Shingler, was an actress. His older brother, Murray Head, is also an actor and singer. Both brothers even played the same character, Freddie Trumper, in the musical Chess at different times.

Anthony went to Sunbury Grammar School in Surrey. He then studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He once shared that acting felt like a natural choice because it was already in his family. He remembered playing the Emperor in a show when he was just six years old and thinking, "This is what I want to do."

Anthony Head's Acting Career

Starting Out in the 1970s and 1980s

Anthony Head began his acting journey in the 1970s. One of his first roles was in the musical Godspell in 1978. That same year, he made his TV debut in the series Enemy at the Door.

In the late 1980s, he became widely recognized in the UK. He starred in a popular series of coffee commercials for Nescafé Gold Blend. In these ads, he played a charming character alongside actress Sharon Maughan.

Becoming Famous with Buffy the Vampire Slayer

In 1997, Anthony Head got a role that would make him famous around the world: Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Giles was a librarian and a mentor to Buffy, helping her fight vampires and demons. While working on Buffy, he lived in the United States, but his family stayed in the UK. He was a regular cast member for most of the show, later appearing as a special guest star.

Popular Roles in the 2000s

After Buffy, Anthony Head continued to appear in many TV shows. In 2003, he played the Prime Minister in the funny BBC sketch show Little Britain. He also had guest roles in dramas like Spooks. In 2006, he played a man facing a difficult time in an episode of the drama Hotel Babylon. He also played Captain Hook at a special children's party at Buckingham Palace for Queen Elizabeth II's 80th birthday.

He also appeared in the Doctor Who universe. In 2006, he played an alien headmaster, Mr. Finch, in an episode called "School Reunion". He also narrated documentaries and voiced characters for Doctor Who audio stories and animated specials.

In 2008, he joined the cast of the BBC drama series Merlin. He played King Uther Pendragon, the father of Prince Arthur. This role made him a familiar face to a new generation of viewers. He also starred in the rock opera film Repo! The Genetic Opera, where he played a character who repossessed organs. Anthony Head also lent his voice to radio shows, including the comedy series Bleak Expectations.

Later Career and Ted Lasso

In the 2010s, Anthony Head continued his busy acting schedule. He had a recurring role in the radio sitcom Cabin Pressure. He also released a solo music album called Staring at the Sun in 2014.

From 2020 to 2023, he played Rupert Mannion in the popular series Ted Lasso. His performance in the third season earned him a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award. He also returned to his role as Giles in an audio series called Slayers: A Buffyverse Story in 2023.

His final roles included Lord Sheffield in Bridgerton (2022) and Julian Marx in the film Upgraded (2024).

Anthony Head's Family and Legacy

Anthony Head met his partner, Sarah Fisher, in 1982. She was dedicated to helping animals. They had two daughters, Emily and Daisy, who are both actresses. Anthony and Sarah were together until Sarah's death in December 2025.

Anthony Head passed away on 1 June 2026, at the age of 72, due to complications from pneumonia. His daughters announced his passing a few days later.

Many of his co-stars, including those from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Ted Lasso, shared their sadness and paid tribute to him. They remembered him as a brilliant actor and a wonderful person. The New York Times described him as a "mainstay of influential television shows."
