Anthony Stewart Head (born 20 February 1954) is an English actor and singer. He is famous for playing wise characters and powerful leaders in many popular TV shows.
Head is best known for his roles as the school librarian and mentor Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and as King Uther Pendragon in Merlin. He also played the Prime Minister in the comedy show Little Britain and the scheming Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso.

Early Life and Family
Anthony Stewart Head was born in Camden Town, London. His family was already involved in the entertainment world. His father, Seafield Head, was a documentary filmmaker. His mother, Helen Shingler, was an actress.
His older brother, Murray Head, is also a well-known actor and singer. Both brothers have played the same role in the musical Chess in London, but at different times.
Head went to Sunbury Grammar School and later studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He said that growing up in an acting family made it a natural career choice for him.
Acting Career
Head's career began in the late 1970s. He appeared in musicals like Godspell and had his first TV role in the series Enemy at the Door.
Rise to Fame
In the late 1980s, Head became a familiar face in the UK. He starred in a popular series of TV commercials for Nescafé Gold Blend coffee. These ads, which told a romantic story, made him very famous.
In 1990, he played the lead role in a London revival of The Rocky Horror Show. His performance was a huge success.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

In 1997, Head got the role that made him famous worldwide: Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Giles was the school librarian who trained Buffy to fight vampires. Head played this character for all seven seasons of the show.
He lived in the United States while filming Buffy, but his family stayed in the UK. He was a main cast member for the first five seasons. He later became a guest star so he could spend more time with his family.
Roles in British Television
After Buffy, Head returned to British television and took on many memorable roles.
Little Britain and Merlin
From 2003 to 2006, he played the Prime Minister who worked with his assistant Sebastian in the comedy sketch show Little Britain.
From 2008 to 2012, he starred as the powerful and strict King Uther Pendragon in the BBC fantasy series Merlin. The show told the story of the young wizard Merlin and Prince Arthur.
Doctor Who Universe
Head has also been part of the Doctor Who universe. In 2006, he played the villainous headmaster Mr. Finch in the episode "School Reunion". He also voiced characters in Doctor Who audio dramas and animated specials.
Recent Work
Head has continued to act in many films and TV shows. He played Will's father in The Inbetweeners Movie and the centaur Chiron in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
From 2020 to 2023, he played the villain Rupert Mannion in the hit comedy series Ted Lasso. For this role, he and the cast were nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award.
In 2023, he returned to the world of Buffy by voicing Giles in an audio series called Slayers: A Buffyverse Story.
Personal Life
Head lives near Bath, Somerset, with his partner, Sarah Fisher. They have two daughters, Emily and Daisy, who are also actresses.
