Antolín Monescillo y Viso (born September 2, 1811 – died August 11, 1897) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in Spain. He started as a priest and then became a bishop in 1861. Over time, he took on bigger roles, eventually becoming a cardinal in 1884. From 1892 until he passed away, he was the Archbishop of Toledo and the Primate of Spain, which is a very high position in the Spanish Catholic Church.

Early Life and Education
Antolín Monescillo y Viso was born on September 2, 1811. His birthplace was Corral de Calatrava, a town in Ciudad Real, Spain. His family worked as farmers. The name Antolín is a Spanish form of Anthony. He went to school at the Seminary of Toledo. There, he studied and earned a special degree called a doctorate in theology. This means he studied religion and religious ideas at a very high level.
Becoming a Priest and Journalist
After his studies, Antolín Monescillo y Viso became a priest. He also worked as a journalist, writing for newspapers. He wrote for El Católico and El Pensamiento Español. In 1842, he even started his own newspaper called La Cruz.
Journey to Becoming a Cardinal
Antolín Monescillo y Viso's career in the Church grew steadily.
Bishop of Calahorra y La Calzada
In 1861, Pope Pius IX chose him to be the bishop of Calahorra y La Calzada. He officially became a bishop on October 6, 1861. Cardinal Cirilo de Alameda y Brea, who was the Archbishop of Toledo at the time, led the ceremony.
Bishop of Jaén
A few years later, on March 27, 1865, he was moved to become the bishop of Jaén. During this time, he attended a very important meeting of Catholic leaders. This meeting was called the First Vatican Council, and it took place from 1869 to 1870.
Archbishop of Valencia
His next big role came on June 22, 1877. He was promoted to become the Archbishop of Valencia. An archbishop is a bishop who leads a larger and more important area called an archdiocese.
Becoming a Cardinal
On November 10, 1884, Pope Leo XIII made him a cardinal. A cardinal is a very high-ranking official in the Catholic Church, just below the Pope. He received his cardinal's hat and was given the title of Sant'Agostino on June 10, 1886.
Archbishop of Toledo and Primate of Spain
His final and most important position was in 1892. On July 11, 1892, he was transferred to the Archdiocese of Toledo. This role also came with the special title of Patriarch of the West Indies. Most importantly, as Archbishop of Toledo, he also became the Primate of Spain. This means he was the highest-ranking Catholic leader in Spain.
Antolín Monescillo y Viso served in this important role until he passed away. He died on August 11, 1897, in Toledo.
