Cirilo de Alameda y Brea (born July 9, 1781, in Torrejón de Velasco, Spain – died June 30, 1872, in Toledo) was an important leader in the Catholic Church. He became a cardinal and served as the archbishop of Toledo from 1857 to 1867.

Life of Cardinal Cirilo

Cirilo de Alameda y Brea started his career as a priest. He worked in countries like Uruguay and Brazil. From 1817 to 1823, he was the leader of his religious order, the Order of Friars Minor. This was a very important role.

Becoming an Archbishop

In 1831, Cirilo was chosen to be the archbishop of Santiago de Cuba. An archbishop is a high-ranking bishop who leads a large area of churches. He was officially made a bishop by Cardinal Francisco Javier de Cienfuegos y Jovellanos. In the same year, he also became an advisor to the government of Spain.

Later, in 1849, he was appointed archbishop of Burgos. Eight years after that, he became the archbishop of Toledo. This was one of the most important positions in the Catholic Church in Spain.

A Cardinal's Later Years

In 1858, Pope Pius IX made him a cardinal. Cardinals are special advisors to the Pope. Cirilo de Alameda y Brea lived a very long life. He passed away in 1872 when he was 90 years old. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living cardinal in the world.
