Anton Schlembach (born February 7, 1932 – died June 15, 2020) was an important German Roman Catholic leader. He served as the 95th Bishop of Speyer. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Catholic Church, overseeing a specific area called a diocese.
Early Life and School
Anton Schlembach was born in Großwenkheim, a small town in Germany. He was the oldest of four children in a farming family. After finishing high school in 1950, he decided to study to become a priest.
He went to the University of Würzburg in Germany and also studied at a special university in Rome. He became a priest for the Würzburg area on October 10, 1956. Later, in 1959, he earned a special degree called a doctorate in theology. This means he studied religious topics at a very high level. In 1981, he became a vicar general in Würzburg, which is a senior helper to the bishop.
Becoming a Bishop
On August 25, 1983, a very important leader, Pope John Paul II, chose Anton Schlembach to become the new Bishop of Speyer. He officially started his new role on October 16, 1983. This special ceremony took place in the Speyer cathedral. His predecessor, Friedrich Wetter, who was then the Archbishop of Munich, helped consecrate him.
Bishop Schlembach served the people of Speyer for many years. He retired from his position on February 10, 2007. This was approved by Pope Benedict XVI.
Anton Schlembach passed away on June 15, 2020, at the age of 88.
