Antonio Maria Bononcini was born and died in a city called Modena in Italy. Just like his older brother, he learned music from a famous teacher named Giovanni Paolo Colonna.
When he was young, between 1690 and 1693, Antonio played music in the orchestra of Cardinal Pamphili. A cardinal is a very important leader in the Catholic Church. In 1698, he wrote a special musical story called La fama eroica to be performed in Rome.
Antonio worked with his brother for several years. They even joined the court orchestra in Vienna, which is the capital city of Austria. In 1705, Antonio became a Kapellmeister there. This important job meant he was in charge of the music for the future Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI.
In 1713, Antonio returned to Italy. He worked in different cities like Milan, Naples, and his hometown, Modena. In 1721, he became the maestro di cappella in Modena. This title meant he was the main music director for the church or court. He stayed in this important role for the rest of his life.
Besides his stage works like operas, Antonio Maria Bononcini wrote many other pieces. He composed over 40 cantatas, which are like short musical stories, usually for one singer and a harpsichord. He also wrote sacred music for church services. This included a Mass in G minor, a Stabat Mater in C Minor, and a Salve Regina.
