Antonio Pacinotti was born in Pisa, Italy, on June 17, 1841. He grew up there and later passed away in the same city. His father was Luigi Pacinotti and his mother was Caterina Catanti.
Antonio was a bright student. He studied mathematics at the University of Pisa. Later, he became an assistant to the astronomer Giovanni Battista Donati in 1862. He then became a professor at different universities. He taught at the technological institute in Bologna in 1864 and at the University of Cagliari in 1873. Finally, in 1881, he took over his father's position as a professor of technological physics at the University of Pisa.
Inventing the Dynamo
Pacinotti is most famous for inventing a much better type of direct-current electrical generator. This machine is known as a dynamo. He built his first dynamo in 1860. He wrote about his invention in a science paper in 1865.
His dynamo was special because it used a "ring armature." This was a ring with a coil of wire wrapped around it. This design helped to produce a much smoother electric current compared to older dynamos. Pacinotti also discovered that his dynamo could work in reverse. This meant it could also be used as an electric motor. This was a very important discovery for the future of electricity!
Other Discoveries
In July 1862, Antonio Pacinotti was one of several scientists who independently discovered a comet. This comet is now known as 109P/Swift-Tuttle.
Today, a street along the Arno River in Pisa, Italy, is named after him. It is called Lungarno Pacinotti.
