Giovanni Battista Donati (born December 16, 1826 – died September 20, 1873) was an important Italian astronomer. He made many discoveries about stars, the Sun, and comets.

Donati studied at the university in his hometown of Pisa. In 1852, he started working at the Observatory of Florence. He became the director of the observatory in 1864.

Studying Stars and Comets

Donati was one of the first scientists to use spectroscopy to study space. Spectroscopy is a way to look at the light from objects. It helps scientists learn what those objects are made of.

Early Star Spectroscopy

He used this method to study stars, the Sun, and comets. In 1860, he watched a total solar eclipse in Spain. That same year, he began his experiments with stellar spectroscopy.

In 1862, Donati wrote a paper called Intorno alle strie degli spettri stellari. This paper showed that it was possible to group stars based on what they were made of.

Comets and Their Light

Donati also used spectroscopy to find out what comets are made of. He studied a comet in 1864. He found that its light showed three special lines. Four years later, another scientist, William Huggins, found these lines were from carbon.

Donati discovered that a comet's light changes when it gets closer to the Sun. He realized that when a comet gets hot, it starts to make its own light. This meant that comets are at least partly made of gas.

Discovering New Comets

Between 1854 and 1864, Donati found six new comets. One of his most famous discoveries was Comet Donati in 1858. This comet was very bright and easy to see.

Cosmical Meteorology

In 1872, Donati studied a very large aurora. An aurora is a beautiful light display in the sky, like the Northern Lights. He thought these events were part of a new science he called "cosmical meteorology." This field would study how space events affect Earth's atmosphere.

Sadly, he became ill and passed away in 1873. This happened shortly after he attended a science meeting in Vienna.

Honors and Legacy

Donati's work is remembered in space today.

  • The Donati crater on the Moon is named after him.
  • The asteroid 16682 Donati is also named in his honor.
