Antonio Reynolds-Dean (born March 11, 1977) is an American basketball coach and former professional player. He is currently an associate head coach for the Georgia Bulldogs men's basketball team.

Antonio played as a forward or center and was 6 feet 7 inches tall. He played college basketball for four years at Rhode Island. In his first year, he was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. By the end of his college career, he had scored 1,576 points and grabbed 1,028 rebounds. He was one of only three players at Rhode Island to achieve over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

After college, he played professionally in different leagues, including the IBA and in Spain. In the IBA, he was the top rebounder and named Rookie of the Year. He later became a coach, working as an assistant for several college teams before joining the Georgia Bulldogs. In 2015, he was honored by being added to the University of Rhode Island Athletics Hall of Fame.

High School Basketball Star

Antonio Reynolds-Dean was born in Marietta, Georgia. He grew up in Atlanta and went to Douglass High School. During his high school years, he was known as Antonio Reynolds.

  • Sophomore Year: He joined the varsity basketball team.
  • Junior Year: He became a top player in the state. He averaged 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 blocks per game. He was also named to the All-State second team by The Atlanta Constitution.

Before his senior year, USA Today listed him as one of the best players in Georgia. In his final high school season, he averaged 24.6 points, 15.5 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 5.1 blocks, and 2 steals per game. He was again chosen for the second-team all-state.

College Career at Rhode Island

Antonio Reynolds-Dean decided to play college basketball for Rhode Island.

Freshman Year (1995-1996)

  • Coach Al Skinner put him in the starting lineup right away.
  • He started all 34 games.
  • He averaged 12.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game.
  • He led the team in rebounds and blocks.
  • He was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year for his great performance.

Sophomore Year (1996-1997)

  • He continued to lead his team in rebounds and blocks.
  • He averaged 11.5 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game.
  • He was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team.

Name Change and Junior Year (1997-1998)

  • In 1997, he added his mother's last name, Dean, to his name.
  • New coach Jim Harrick kept him in the starting lineup.
  • He averaged 11.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game.
  • His 85 blocks ranked him 9th in the entire NCAA Division I.
  • The Rhode Island Rams reached the Elite Eight in the 1998 NCAA tournament. They lost a close game to the Stanford Cardinal.

Senior Year (1998-1999)

  • He had his best scoring year, averaging 13.2 points per game.
  • He also had career highs in minutes played and assists.
  • The Rams won the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

Professional Basketball Journey

After college, Antonio Reynolds-Dean was eligible for the 1999 NBA draft but was not chosen by an NBA team. He still had a strong desire to play professionally.

  • He played one game in Argentina for Estudiantes de Bahía Blanca.
  • He then joined the Dakota Wizards in the IBA for the 1999–2000 season.
  • In the IBA, he was outstanding, averaging 18.7 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. He led the league in rebounding.
  • He was named to the All-IBA First Team and won the IBA Rookie of the Year award.
  • In 2000, he also played briefly for the Florida Sea Dragons and the Brooklyn Kings in the USBL.

Playing in Spain

In September 2000, Antonio moved to Spain to play for CB Murcia.

  • He played 30 games, averaging 18.2 points and 8.2 rebounds.
  • The next season, he played for Manresa, averaging 15.3 points and 8.2 rebounds.
  • In 2002, he returned to Murcia. In the 2002-2003 season, he helped his team win the league title and get promoted to the top Spanish league, Liga ACB.
  • He played 34 games in the Liga ACB, averaging 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.
  • He continued to play in Spain for teams like CAI Zaragoza, Drac Inca, Plus Pujol Lleida, and Ciudad de Huelva until 2007.

Return to Argentina

After his time in Spain, Antonio moved back to Argentina.

  • He played 36 games for Quilmes.
  • He finished his playing career with Boca Juniors, playing 4 games.

In 2012, Antonio Reynolds-Dean was honored by being selected for the Dakota Wizards All-Time Team.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Antonio Reynolds-Dean began his coaching career.

  • He started as the director of basketball operations for the Fairfield Stags.
  • He then became an assistant coach at Northeastern from 2009 to 2014.
  • From 2014 to 2015, he was an assistant coach at College of Charleston.
  • He returned to his alma mater, Rhode Island, as an assistant coach from 2015 to 2017.
  • From 2017 to 2022, he served as an assistant coach for the Clemson Tigers.
  • In 2022, Antonio Reynolds-Dean became the associate head coach for the Georgia Bulldogs under head coach Mike White.

Personal Life

Antonio Reynolds-Dean is married to Johanna, and they have two daughters, Jasmine and Naomi. He has a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Rhode Island and a master's degree in sports leadership from Northwestern University.
