Antonio de Trueba

Antonio de Trueba (born December 24, 1819 – died March 10, 1889) was a famous Spanish writer. He was a poet, a novelist (someone who writes novels), and a folklorist (someone who studies traditional stories and customs). He wrote many popular stories, especially about his home region in Spain.

Antonio de Trueba's Life

Early Years and Moving to Madrid

Antonio de Trueba was born in Galdames, a town in Biscay, Spain. This was in the year 1819, though some records say 1821. He received his early education at home.

In 1835, when he was a teenager, he moved to Madrid. He went there to learn about business. However, he soon realized that business was not what he wanted to do. After some time, he decided to become a journalist. He hoped to earn a living by writing.

While working as a clerk in a small business, he spent his free time writing. He wrote short poems and stories. These writings often showed his feelings and memories of his home in the Basque region. He missed his homeland while living in the busy city.

Working for the Queen

His charming writings caught the attention of Queen Isabella II of Spain. The Queen made him the official historian for the Biscay region. This job meant he would record important events and stories from that area. He held this position for many years.

Becoming a Popular Author

In 1851, Antonio de Trueba became very popular with two of his works. These were El Cid Campeador and El Libro de los Cantares. His fame grew even more when his first collection of poems, called Cantares, was published in 1852.

For the next eleven years, he focused on journalism. He wrote many articles and stories. Some of his best works from this period were collected into books. These included Cuentos populares (1862), Cuentos de color de rosa (1864), and Cuentos campesinos (1865).

Other collections of his tales came out in 1859, 1860, and 1866. These stories were especially loved when they were about his home region and its people. People enjoyed their simple style and gentle feelings. Antonio de Trueba continued to write many more stories in this same charming way.

His Writing Style

Antonio de Trueba was known for his simple and heartfelt writing. His short stories, especially those about rural life, were very popular. He often wrote about the landscapes and people of his northern Spanish home. His readers loved his sweet songs and stories filled with love for his homeland.

However, when he tried to write longer novels, like those about the famous hero El Cid, he was not as successful. He was very careful to record historical facts. This sometimes meant his imagination did not have enough freedom in these longer works.

Antonio de Trueba is remembered as a kind and pleasant writer. He played a part in developing the novel of manners in 19th-century Spain. This type of novel focuses on the customs and social rules of a particular time and place.

He passed away in Bilbao.
