Antonio del Castillo y Saavedra (born July 10, 1616 – died February 2, 1668) was a Spanish artist. He was known as a painter, a sculptor, and even a poet during the Baroque period.
Life of Antonio del Castillo
Antonio del Castillo y Saavedra was born in Córdoba, Spain. This was on July 10, 1616.
He learned how to paint from his father, Agustín del Castillo. After his father passed away, Antonio continued his training. From 1631 to 1634, he studied with Ignacio Aedo Calderón, who was a religious painter.
Later, Antonio went to Seville to learn more. He was taught by famous artists like Francisco de Zurbarán. His uncle, Juan del Castillo, also taught him. Juan del Castillo was a teacher to other well-known artists. These included Alonso Cano, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and Pedro de Moya.
In 1635, Antonio returned to his hometown of Córdoba. There, he created many artworks. He painted frescoes, which are paintings done on wet plaster walls. He also made many oil paintings. Some of his works can still be seen in places like the church of Santa Marina.
Antonio del Castillo y Saavedra passed away in Córdoba in 1668.
