Juan del Castillo (born around 1590 – died around 1657) was a Spanish painter during the Baroque period. Many of his artworks became well-known because of his famous student, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.
Early Life and Training
Juan del Castillo was the youngest brother of another painter named Agustín. Both brothers learned how to paint from Luis Fernández in the city of Seville, Spain. This training helped them become skilled artists.
Where He Painted
After his training, Juan del Castillo created many religious artworks. He painted both frescoes (paintings on wet plaster walls) and oil paintings. He worked mostly in and around Seville. He also traveled to other important Spanish cities like Granada and Cádiz to create his art.
His Students and Style
Juan del Castillo was a teacher to several important artists. Among his students were his brother-in-law Alonso Cano and his nephew Antonio. His most famous student was Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, who later became very well-known. Other students included Pedro de Moya, Andro de Medina, and Juan de Valdés Leal. Juan del Castillo's own painting style was influenced by the art from Venetian artists, known for their rich colors and dramatic scenes.
