Anubias is a group of tropical plants. They belong to the plant family called Araceae. These plants are very popular for use in aquariums. Many people like to put them in their fish tanks.
Anubias plants often grow in shady places. Because of this, they were named after Anubis. Anubis was an ancient Egyptian god. He was known as the god of the afterlife.
A scientist named Heinrich Wilhelm Schott first described this group of plants in 1857. The first plant he described was A. afzelii. This plant is considered the main example for the Anubias group.
Besides A. afzelii, other well-known Anubias species include:
- A. barteri
- A. gigantea
- A. gilletii
- A. gracilis
- A. hastifolia
- A. heterophylla
- A. pynaertii
These plants are known for being tough and easy to care for. This makes them a great choice for beginners in the aquarium hobby.
