Anupam Sen, born on August 5, 1940, is a well-known Bangladeshi author and sociologist. A sociologist studies how people live together in groups and societies. He is also a social activist, meaning he works to bring about positive changes in society.
He served as the Vice-Chancellor of Premier University, Chittagong. This is like being the main leader of a university. In 2014, he received the Ekushey Padak, a very important award from the Government of Bangladesh.

Early Life and Family History
Anupam Sen was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh. His parents were Snehalata Sen and Birendra Lal Sen. His father studied English and Law.
Dr. Sen's great-grandfather, Sharat Chandra Das, was a famous scholar. He traveled to Tibet in the 1880s, which was a very difficult journey back then. He wrote a book called My Journey to Central Tibet and Lasha. This book shared details about Tibetan life and culture.
Sharat Chandra Das also found an old Sanskrit story called Bodhisotto Obodan. He translated it into Bengali. A famous poet, Rabindranath Tagore, used this story as inspiration for some of his own works.
Dr. Sen's uncle, Shashanka Mohan Sen, was a poet and critic. He became a professor at Kolkata University in 1918. Because of his family, Dr. Sen grew up in a home full of culture and learning.
Education Journey
Anupam Sen studied sociology at the University of Dhaka. He earned his first degree in 1962 and his master's degree in 1963.
Later, in 1979, he earned his PhD in sociology from McMaster University in Canada. His PhD paper was about how countries develop and how different groups of people form within them. This paper was later published as a book.
Teaching Career
Dr. Sen started his teaching career in 1965 when he was 25 years old. He first taught at BUET as a lecturer. In 1966, he moved to the University of Dhaka.
Three years later, he joined the new Sociology department at University of Chittagong. He became a full professor there in 1984. In the same year, he was chosen as the Dean of Social Sciences.
From 1997 to 2001, he also served on the board of directors for Bangladesh Bank. This is the central bank of Bangladesh. On October 1, 2006, he became the Vice-Chancellor of Premier University, Chittagong. He resigned from this role on December 7, 2024, due to his age.
Role in Important Movements
Dr. Sen was a freedom fighter during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. At that time, he was the General Secretary of the Chittagong University Teachers Association.
After the war, he continued to fight against unfairness. In 1985–86, he led university teachers to protest against martial law. They marched in the streets to bring back democratic rights for people.

- He is the President of the Odissi & Tagore Dance Movement Centre in Chittagong.
- He has been a Senior Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS).
- He served as a Director on the board of Bangladesh Bank.
- He is a life member of the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad in Calcutta.
- He was the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Chittagong.
