Anvari (born 1126, died 1189) was a famous Persian poet. His full name was Awhad ad-Din 'Ali ibn Mohammad Khavarani. He was also known as Awhad ad-Din 'Ali ibn Mahmud.

Anvari was born in a place called Abivard, which is now in Turkmenistan. He later died in Balkh, a city in Khorāsān, which is now part of Afghanistan. He was a very smart person who studied both science and literature. He went to a special school in Toon (now Ferdows, Iran). He became well-known as an astronomer and a poet.

Anvari's Amazing Poems

Anvari's poems were collected in a book called a Deewan. This collection includes many different types of poems. Some were praises for important people, while others were sad poems or even funny, sarcastic ones.

His sad poem called "Tears of Khorasan" is very famous. It was translated into English in 1789. Many people think it is one of the most beautiful poems in Persian literature. The Cambridge History of Iran even calls Anvari "one of the greatest figures in Persian literature."

Even though his poems were beautiful, they could sometimes be hard to understand. They were often complex, meaning they had many layers of meaning. Because of this, people sometimes needed help to figure out what he meant.

Life at the Royal Court

Anvari wrote a special poem to honor Sultan Sanjar. Sultan Sanjar was a ruler of Khorasan from the Seljuk family. This poem helped Anvari gain the Sultan's favor.

Because of this, Anvari was able to get support from the Sultan and two rulers who came after him. This meant he had a good life at the royal court.

However, things changed for Anvari. He once made a prediction about bad things happening in October 1185. When his prediction did not come true, he lost the king's favor. After this, he had to live a life focused on scholarly work. His life ended in 1189.

Anvari's Talents and Challenges

Anvari was born in the Khawaran area of Khorasan in the early 1100s. He was a favorite of Sultan Sanjar. He even went with the Sultan on his military trips.

Once, when the Sultan was attacking a fort, Anvari had a poetry contest. He exchanged verses with another poet, Rashidi, who was inside the fort. They sent their poems to each other by attaching them to arrows!

Anvari was very skilled with words. His famous sad poem about the damage caused by the Ghuzz tribes in Khurasan shows his power. He was also good at using irony and making fun of things in his writings.

He knew a lot about astrology. He also believed he was better than others in many subjects. These included logic, music, theology, and mathematics.

After Sultan Sanjar, Anvari felt that the new rulers did not appreciate his work enough. He thought their rewards were too small. This, or perhaps jealousy from other poets, made him stop writing poems that praised people. He also stopped writing love poems.

His sarcastic poems likely made him some enemies. As his luck changed, he often complained about fate. His writing style could sometimes be unclear. Because of this, and changes in what people liked to read, his poems are not as well-known today.

Anvari died in Balkh near the end of the 12th century. His Diwan (collection of poems) has long poems and shorter, simpler ones. His longest poem, The Tears of Khorassan, was translated into English.
