Anwan Glover's Career Journey

Starting with the BackYard Band

Anwan Glover first became famous in his local area as a teenager in 1992. He was one of the first members of the BackYard Band. Many people see him as the leader of the band, and he is known as its "lead talker." The band started by "beating on buckets," which means they used everyday items to make music. Glover has said that the band learned a lot from Chuck Brown, who is known as the "godfather" of go-go music. Chuck Brown helped them when they were just starting out.

Music and Tours

The BackYard Band still performs regularly in the Washington, D.C., area. They have also toured many cities on the East Coast, including New York, Atlanta, New Orleans, and Miami. The band has released five albums. One of their albums, Hood Related, reached number 69 on the Billboard Magazine R&B albums chart in 1997. In 2018, the band even toured Ghana, bringing D.C.'s unique go-go music to Africa. Glover explained that the band has lasted so long because they realized they had a special connection. They liked their music, and their fans liked it too, so they kept their original members.

Acting and Other Work

Glover started acting in late 2003. His first role was as Slim Charles in the HBO TV series The Wire. He has also appeared in music videos, such as "Dem Boyz" by Boyz n da Hood and "Chillin" by Wale. He used to host a nightly radio show on 93.9 WKYS-FM radio in the Washington metropolitan area.

Glover also appeared in three episodes of the first season of the HBO TV series Treme. He often speaks to young people in the Washington area, sharing his experiences. This movie was written by author George Pelecanos, who also contributed to The Wire.
