Anwar Wagdi (born Anwar Wagdi Yehia El Fattal, 11 October 1904 – 14 May 1955) was a very famous Egyptian actor, screenwriter, director, and producer. He was one of the biggest stars in Egyptian cinema during his time, known for his handsome looks and talent.
About Anwar Wagdi
Anwar Wagdi was born in the El Daher area of Cairo, Egypt. His father, Yehia Wagdy El-Fattal, came to Egypt from Syria with his family in the 1800s. Anwar's mother, Muhiba El-Rikaby, was from Cairo.
Anwar Wagdi married three famous Egyptian actresses during his life: Elham Hussein, Leila Mourad, and Laila Fawzi. He was married to Leila Mourad three times! Sadly, Anwar Wagdi passed away at the age of 50 in Sweden. He was there seeking treatment for a serious illness.
His Amazing Career
Anwar Wagdi started his acting journey in 1922. He began as an "extra" (a background actor) in a play called "Julius Caesar" with the Youssef Wahbi Theatre Company. He quickly became a big star and played main roles in many films.
Between 1932 and 1955, Anwar Wagdi acted in or directed 92 Egyptian films. He was especially successful when he worked with his wife at the time, the legendary Egyptian singer and actress Leila Mourad. They made many popular movies together.
In 1934, Youssef Wahbi directed his first film, "Defense," and asked Anwar Wagdi to be in it. After some money problems with a film, Anwar joined the National Force Theater in 1935. He soon realized that movies were a better fit for his talents because they reached so many people.
Anwar Wagdi became a true movie star. Because he was so good-looking, directors often cast him as a rich, important person. He even started his own film company called "Films Nations." Through this company, he produced, directed, and acted in many movies, often starring alongside Leila Mourad. One of their first films together was "Leila bint el fukara" (Leila the Poor Girl).
