Who are the Anwyl Family?
The Anwyl family has a long and interesting history. They trace their family tree back to ancient Welsh royalty. Their story shows how families kept track of their heritage for hundreds of years.
Tracing the Anwyl Family Tree
The Anwyl family's history begins with Owain Gwynedd. He was a powerful Welsh prince in the 12th century. His son, Rhodri ab Owain Gwynedd, was Lord of Anglesey. The family line continued through Rhodri's descendants.
One important ancestor was Tomas ap Rhodri. He was known as the Lord of Rhiw Llwyd. His family line included Caradog, Gruffudd, Dafydd, and Hywel. These family members were also called the Lords of Rhiw Llwyd.
Important Family Members
Later, Maredudd ap Hywel lived in the 14th century. He had two sons: Robert and James. These brothers played a big part in the family's story.
According to an old book called The Royal Tribes of Wales, Robert and James inherited land. James, the younger brother, married and lived in two family homes. Robert, the older brother, started the Wynn of Gwydir family line. James started other important family lines, like the Anwyl of Parc family.
The War of Welsh Independence
During the early 1400s, a big war happened in Wales. This was the last war for Welsh independence. It was led by Owain Glyndŵr. The Anwyl brothers, Robert and James, chose different sides.
- Robert, the older brother, supported Owain Glyndŵr. He survived the war and later received a special pardon from the English King.
- James, the younger brother, was against Glyndŵr. He supported the English Crown. James was in charge of Caernarfon town during the war.
Because James opposed Glyndŵr, his two homes were burned down. James ap Maredudd was killed during this war in Caernarfon. His body was taken by sea to be buried.
The Anwyl Family Continues
After James ap Maredudd, his son Ieuan (also called James) continued the family line. The family became known as the Anwyl of Parc family. This was because they lived near Penrhyndeudraeth.
Key Anwyl Leaders
- Siôn (John) ap Maredudd: People said that his family and friends were very loyal to him. They even had a saying: "Tylwyth John ab Maredudd," meaning "the race of John ab Maredudd."
- Morys (Morris) ap Sion ap Maredudd: He continued the family line.
- Robert ap Morys o'r Parc: From his time, the family was officially known as the Anwyl of Parc Family.
- William Lewis Anwyl of Park (1565–1642): He was a very important person. He served as a High Sheriff of Merionethshire twice and once as High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire. He had eight sons and four daughters.

- Lewis (died 1641)
- Robert (died 1653)
- John (died 1659)
- Edward (died 1674)
- William (died 1694): His family line continued until 1879.

The Anwyl of Tywyn Today
The current Anwyl of Tywyn family comes from Evan (Ieuan), the sixth son of William Lewis Anwyl. His descendants became the main branch of the family.
Evan Anwyl of Brynkir and later Llugwy was also a High Sheriff of Merionethshire. His son, Maurice Anwyl of Llugwy, continued the family. The Anwyl family lived at Llugwy for a long time. Before that, they lived at Parc for many generations.
Evan Vaughan Anwyl
Evan Vaughan Anwyl was born on December 9, 1943. He is the current head of the Anwyl of Tywyn Family. His family believes their male line goes all the way back to William Lewis Anwyl and even further to Owain Gwynedd.
He lives in Tywyn, Gwynedd, in north Wales. He also speaks Welsh. Evan Vaughan Anwyl went to Tywyn Grammar School. He then studied at the University of Wales Aberystwyth. He became a teacher, just like his two sisters.
He was once interviewed for a book. He said that history was not his favorite subject. He also mentioned that his family has always been humble farmers. He said they are proud of their family history, but mostly keep it to themselves.
