Apache Mall is a large shopping mall located in Rochester, Minnesota. It first opened its doors in 1969. You can find it where U.S. Route 52 and U.S. Route 14 meet.
The mall's food court offers free wi-fi for everyone. This service has been available since 2007. Brookfield Properties Retail Group owns and manages Apache Mall.
Big stores like Scheels All Sports, Barnes & Noble, Macy's, and JCPenney are the main "anchor" stores. These are the large stores that attract many shoppers. Other important stores, sometimes called "junior anchors," include Boston Shoe & Boot Repair, Orangetheory Fitness, and Men's Wearhouse. There is one empty space that used to be a Herberger's store.
In 2014, the Sears store at the mall closed down. Soon after, plans were made for a new Scheels All Sports store. This new store also meant the mall building would get bigger. Scheels opened in 2015. Later, in 2018, the Herberger's store closed because its parent company went out of business.
Exploring Apache Mall's History
How Apache Mall Began
Apache Mall opened in 1969. It was built on a large piece of land that used to be a farm. This land was bought from George Baihly.
By the mid-1960s, the southwest part of Rochester was growing fast. A major road, U.S. Route 52, was extended past U.S. Route 14. This road extension helped the city grow even more to the south.
Many new homes and businesses were built in the areas around the city. This is called suburban development. The mall's construction was a big step in moving shopping away from downtown Rochester. It changed how people shopped in the area.
Major Store Changes Over Time
In 1972, a big department store called Dayton's moved to Apache Mall. Dayton's was part of Dayton-Hudson Corporation, which later became Target Corporation. Their new store at the mall was very large.
At that time, Apache Mall was the third-largest shopping center in Minnesota. Over the years, the Dayton's store changed its name. It became Marshall Field's after a company merger. Finally, it was rebranded as Macy's when it was sold to another company.
