How Appistoki Peak Got Its Name
The name "Appistoki" has an interesting story. A mapmaker named R. T. Evans was working on an early map of the park. He asked his Native American guide what the Blackfeet word was for "looking over something." The guide, however, misunderstood the question. He thought Evans was asking about a powerful being. So, the guide gave him the name "Appistoki." This is the name for the Blackfeet god who watches over everything and everyone.
