Apple Creek is a small, quiet community in Perry County, Missouri, USA. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. You can find Apple Creek north of Missouri Route F. It is located between two major roads: I-55 to the west and U.S. Route 61 to the east. The community of Uniontown is just two miles east on Route 61.
What's in a Name?
Apple Creek got its name from a nearby stream, also called Apple Creek. Long ago, French settlers called this stream "Riviere à la Pomme." This French name means "apple river." They likely named it this way because apple trees grew along its banks. Later, American settlers translated the name into English, calling it "Apple River" or "Apple Creek."
A Look Back in Time
The area now known as Apple Creek was first called Schnurbusch. This name came from a well-known family who lived there.
In the early 1820s, the first people to settle Apple Creek were German Catholic immigrants. They came from a region in Europe called Baden. These families traveled a long way! They left Europe from ports like Le Havre, France and Antwerp, Belgium. Then, they sailed across the ocean and arrived in Perry County after passing through New Orleans.
The community's first Catholic church was built in 1828. It was named St. Joseph. This church was used for 12 years. After that, a second church, known as the Rock Church, was built. From 1881 to 1884, a new, larger brick church was constructed for the St. Joseph parish. Later, a rectory (a house for priests) was built in 1904, and a convent (a home for nuns) was added in 1917. There is also a special place called Our Lady of Saint Joseph shrine. It was built in 1857 and includes a cave spring and a walkway with stonework.
