Apple cheese, called Obuolių sūris in Lithuanian, is a special sweet treat from Lithuania. Even though it's called "cheese," it's actually made from apples! This traditional dessert is created by cooking apples with sugar until they become very thick and firm. Long ago, people often used honey instead of sugar to make it sweet.
A Sweet History
Apple cheese has a very long history, going all the way back to the Middle Ages. This was a time in Europe between the 5th and 15th centuries. People back then were already enjoying this unique apple dessert!
One of the oldest known recipes for apple cheese was written by a cook for the powerful Radvila family. The Radvilas were a very important noble family in Lithuania, known for their grand homes and influence.
Later, in 1907, the recipe for apple cheese was shared with even more people. It was published in a Lithuanian magazine called "Lietuvos virėja" (which means "Lithuanian Cook"). This magazine was printed in Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania.
Today, apple cheese is still a beloved part of Lithuanian culture. It's often enjoyed as a snack or a dessert, showing how old traditions can stay popular for centuries!
