Appomattox campaign Confederate order of battle facts for kids
The Confederate States Army fought its last big battle of the American Civil War in 1865. This was called the Appomattox campaign. It lasted from March 29 to April 9. The campaign ended with the Confederate army surrendering on April 9 at Appomattox Court House. This article tells you about the Confederate units and their leaders during this final campaign. Understanding the Ranks
Here are some short forms (abbreviations) used for military ranks:
- Gen = General (the highest rank)
- LTG = Lieutenant General
- MG = Major General
- BG = Brigadier General
- Col = Colonel
- Ltc = Lieutenant Colonel
- Maj = Major
- Cpt = Captain
- Lt = Lieutenant
- Sgt = Sergeant
Other Important Notes
- (w) = wounded (got hurt in battle)
- (mw) = mortally wounded (got hurt so badly they died)
- (k) = killed in action (died in battle)
- (c) = captured (taken by the enemy army)

This was the main Confederate army in the East.
