Who Was Aquilino Ribeiro?
His Early Life and Challenges
Aquilino Ribeiro was born in a place called Carregal de Tabosa, in Sernancelhe, Portugal. His parents were Joaquim Francisco Ribeiro and Mariana do Rosário Gomes. He had three older brothers and sisters.
Aquilino was first meant to become a priest. But he became involved with the Portuguese Republican Party. This group was against the Royal House of Braganza, who ruled Portugal at the time. Because of his political views, he had to leave Portugal and live in Paris, France, for a while.
In 1914, he came back to Portugal when World War I began. By then, Portugal had changed. The Portuguese First Republic had been set up, meaning the country was no longer ruled by a king.
Standing Up to Power
Later in his life, Aquilino Ribeiro disagreed with the government led by António de Oliveira Salazar. This government was called the Estado Novo. They often censored or banned books they didn't like. Several of Aquilino's books were affected by these rules.
His Family Life
Aquilino Ribeiro was married two times. His first wife was Grete Tiedemann, a German woman. They married in 1913 and had a son named Aníbal in 1914. Sadly, Grete passed away in 1927.
In 1929, he married Jerónima Dantas Machado. Her father was Bernardino Machado, who used to be the President of Portugal. Aquilino and Jerónima had a son named Aquilino Ribeiro Machado in 1930. This son later became the Mayor of Lisbon from 1977 to 1979.
