History of Aquilla
Aquilla started as a settlement in the 1840s. Early settlers were drawn to the area because it was close to Hillsboro and had lots of timber (wood). The first settlement was called Mudtown.
The community and a nearby creek were likely named after an early settler, Aquilla Jones. In 1859, Aquilla got its own post office.
About 20 years later, a railroad track was built nearby. Businesses and people moved closer to the rail line. This helped the town grow.
In 1897, a well was dug to provide fresh water. This was important because people were getting sick from drinking creek water.
Aquilla had one of the first banks in Texas, which opened in 1905. The town also had a health spa around that time. By 1914, Aquilla had grown quite a bit. It had over 500 people, many stores, hotels, churches, a school, a newspaper, and a busy lumber company.
By the late 1950s, the population was around 250. In 2017, there were 109 residents and two churches in Aquilla.
