Aquitania is a town and municipality in Boyacá Department, Colombia. A municipality is like a local government area, and a department is a larger region, similar to a state. Aquitania is part of the Sugamuxi Province, which is a smaller area within the Boyacá Department.
The town of Aquitania is located in a high-altitude area called the Altiplano Cundiboyacense. It sits at an elevation of about 3,030 meters (9,940 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest towns in the region. Aquitania is also right next to Lake Tota on its eastern side.
Aquitania shares its borders with several other towns. To the north, it borders Sogamoso, Cuítiva, and Mongua. To the south, you'll find Zetaquirá, San Eduardo, and Páez. On the east, it borders Labranzagrande, Pajarito, Recetor, and Chámeza. Finally, to the west, it borders Cuítiva, Tota, Zetaquirá, and San Eduardo.
History of Aquitania
Before the Spanish arrived in Colombia, the area where Aquitania is now was called "Guáquia." It was home to the Muisca people, who were an indigenous group. The Muisca people in this area were ruled by a leader known as the iraca of Sugamuxi.
A Spanish explorer named Juan de San Martín reached this region in 1540. The modern town of Aquitania was officially founded much later, in the year 1777.
What Aquitania Produces
The economy of Aquitania mainly relies on farming. Farmers in the area grow several important crops that are sold commercially. These include onions, peas, corn, and potatoes. These crops are a big part of the local economy.
