Arapaho is a small town in Oklahoma, United States. It is the main town, or county seat, of Custer County. In 2020, about 668 people lived there. The town is located along U.S. Route 183 and is named after the Arapaho Native American tribe.

Arapaho's Early Days and Growth

The land where Arapaho now stands was first mapped out in 1891. This happened before the Cheyenne-Arapaho land was opened for settlement on April 19, 1892. A U.S. post office was set up for the new community on March 23, 1892.

On April 19, 1892, many settlers arrived, just as expected. By the end of that day, about 400 land claims had been made. The town's first newspaper, The Arapahoe Arrow, started just 10 days later. Its name soon changed to The Arapahoe Bee.

Building the Town's Foundations

In its first few years, several church groups were formed in Arapaho. By 1894, the county courthouse and a school had been built. A library where people could borrow books was also open by May 1904.

The Oklahoma Territorial Legislature officially approved Arapaho as an incorporated town on March 2, 1905. The original county courthouse had burned down in 1896. A new one was finally built in 1935 using special government funds. It was made larger in 1985.
