Arapaima leptosoma is a special kind of freshwater fish. It lives only in Brazil. This fish is part of a group called arapaimas. These are some of the biggest freshwater fish in the world. Like other arapaimas, this fish can breathe air. It is found where the Solimões and Purus Rivers meet in Amazonas, Brazil. Scientists think it might live in a larger area too.

About the Arapaima Leptosoma
Arapaima leptosoma is a unique fish. It was first described in 2013. This made it the first new arapaima species found since 1847. Scientists learned about it from one young fish specimen. This special specimen is called a holotype.
How It Breathes
Arapaimas are known for being able to breathe air. This means they can get oxygen from the air, not just from the water. This ability helps them survive in waters with low oxygen.
Where It Lives
This fish is known to live in the Amazon River basin. Specifically, it has been found where the Solimões and Purus rivers join. This area is in the state of Amazonas, Brazil.
In Aquariums
Sometimes, live Arapaima leptosoma fish are seen in aquariums. However, they are often mistaken for another species. They are usually thought to be Arapaima gigas. One way to tell them apart is by their tail. Arapaima leptosoma has a deeper tail section compared to other arapaima species.
Its Conservation Status
The Arapaima leptosoma is listed as "data deficient" by the IUCN Red List. This means there is not enough information about its population. Scientists do not know how many of these fish exist. They also do not know about the threats it faces.
However, it is likely in danger from overfishing. This is a problem for other types of arapaimas. Overfishing happens when too many fish are caught. This can make a species disappear. More research is needed to protect this special fish.
