Aravind Adiga (born 23 October 1974) is an Indian writer and journalist. He is famous for his first novel, The White Tiger, which won the important Man Booker Prize in 2008.

Early Life and Education

Aravind Adiga was born in Madras (now Chennai), India, on October 23, 1974. His parents, Usha Adiga and Dr. K. Madhava Adiga, were from Mangalore, a city in India. His family had some well-known members, including his grandfather, who was a bank chairman.

Aravind grew up in Mangalore. He went to Canara High School and then St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru. He finished his school studies there in 1990.

Later, Aravind moved to Sydney, Australia, with his family. He attended James Ruse Agricultural High School. After that, he studied English literature at Columbia College of Columbia University in New York City. He graduated with high honors in 1997. He also studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, in England.

Career as a Writer

Journalism Experience

Aravind Adiga started his career as a trainee journalist at the Financial Times. He wrote articles for magazines like Money and Time. He often wrote about business and money.

In 2003, he interviewed Donald Trump, who later became a US President. That same year, he moved to New Delhi, India. There, he worked as a reporter for Time magazine, covering news in South Asia. He later explained that journalism helped him return to India.

Three years later, he decided to become a freelance writer. This meant he worked for himself and sold his articles to different publications. He then moved to Mumbai.

The White Tiger

After leaving his job at Time, Adiga began writing his first novel, The White Tiger. The book was published in March 2008. It quickly became very popular and won the Booker Prize later that year. This made him the fourth Indian-born author to win this famous award.

Winning the Booker Prize helped The White Tiger sell over 200,000 copies in India. The book was highly praised by critics. USA Today called it "one of the most powerful books." The Washington Post described it as a "blistering description of India's corrupt upper class." They also said it was "fresh, funny, different."

In April 2009, it was announced that The White Tiger would be made into a movie. The film was later released on Netflix in 2021.

Other Books

Aravind Adiga has written several other books. His second book, Between the Assassinations, is a collection of short stories. These stories are set in a made-up town on the coast of India. It was released in India in November 2008.

His third book, Last Man in Tower, came out in September 2011. His next novel, Selection Day, was published in January 2017.
