History
Name Arbella
General characteristics

The Arbella (sometimes spelled Arabella) was a very important ship. It was the main ship, or flagship, of the Winthrop Fleet. In 1630, this ship carried Governor John Winthrop and many other people from England to Salem.

These people were Puritans, who were looking for religious freedom. They also brought the official document, called the Charter, for the Massachusetts Bay Company. This journey, from April 8 to June 12, 1630, helped create the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

It's believed that John Winthrop gave his famous speech, "A Model of Christian Charity," while on board the Arbella. Also on the ship was Anne Bradstreet. She became the first European woman to have her poems published from the New World.

The ship was first named Eagle. But its name was changed to honor Lady Arbella Johnson. She was a member of Winthrop's group, and her husband, Isaac, was also with them. Lady Arbella was the daughter of a nobleman, Thomas Clinton, 3rd Earl of Lincoln.
