How Arcadia Started
Arcadia started as a town not long after the Land Rush of 1889. People, including both white and African American cotton farmers, moved there. They named the town after a place in Greece called Arcadia. A post office opened in 1890.
Early Growth and Challenges
A railroad line was built nearby in 1902-1903. It connected Bartlesville to Oklahoma City, which helped the town grow. Arcadia became a busy farming community in the early 1900s. The soil near the Deep Fork River was perfect for growing cotton. In 1904, the local newspaper, the Arcadia Star, said about 800 people lived in Arcadia. By 1907, when Oklahoma became a state, the town had 994 residents.
Fire and Incorporation
In June 1924, a big fire destroyed most of the businesses in Arcadia. Only one building, Tulon's Drugstore, survived. This old drugstore is now a special historic place. For many years, people in Arcadia did not want the town to become an official city. But when Edmond, Oklahoma tried to take over the community in the mid-1980s, opinions changed. Arcadia finally became an official town in 1987.
