Life of Archduke Joseph Karl
Like many young members of royal families, Archduke Joseph Karl joined the military. He became a Major General in the Austrian Army in 1860. This was a high-ranking position. During the Austro-Prussian War, he led a group of soldiers called a Brigade. He was known for his bravery, as three horses were shot from under him during the Battle of Königgrätz.
In 1867, he received the title of Palatine of Hungary. This was after his half-brother, Stephen, passed away without children. By this time, the role of Palatine was mostly symbolic. It meant he was a representative of the royal family in Hungary, but he didn't have much political power.
His Interest in Languages
Archduke Joseph Karl was very interested in the Romani language. He even wrote about it. He shared his studies with Albert Thomas Sinclair, an American lawyer who also loved languages. Joseph Karl sent Sinclair a large book he had written. This book compared Romani words to words from ancient languages like Sanskrit and Hindustani Persian. It was a very important work about languages.
Helping a Town Grow
In the late 1880s, Archduke Joseph had an idea to help a small fishing village called Crikvenica. He wanted to turn it into a popular health resort. A health resort is a place where people go to relax and improve their health. Thanks to his efforts, a large hotel named after him, the Grand Hotel, opened there in 1895.
His main home was the Archduke Joseph's Palace in Budapest, which was the capital of Hungary.
Marriage and Family
On May 12, 1864, Archduke Joseph Karl married Princess Clotilde of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. She was born in 1846 and passed away in 1927. They were married in Coburg, a city in Germany. Princess Clotilde was the oldest daughter of Prince August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Princess Clémentine of Orléans.
Archduke Joseph Karl and Princess Clotilde had seven children together:
- Archduchess Elisabeth Klementine (1865–1866)
- Archduchess Maria Dorothea (1867–1932)
- Archduchess Margarethe Klementine (1870–1955)
- Archduke Joseph August (1872–1962)
- Archduke Ladislaus Philipp (1875–1895)
- Archduchess Elisabeth Henriette (1883–1958)
