Para-archery is an exciting sport where athletes use bows and arrows to hit a target. It's just like regular archery, but it's specially adapted for people with disabilities. This sport has been a part of every Summer Paralympic Games since the very first one in 1960. Athletes compete in different events, both as individuals and in teams. There are events for both men and women.

To make the competition fair, archers are grouped based on their disability. This helps ensure everyone competes against others with similar abilities.

  • W1: These are athletes who use wheelchairs and have challenges with all four of their limbs.
  • W2: These athletes also use wheelchairs, but they have full use of their arms.
  • W3: This group includes athletes who can stand. Some athletes in this group might sit on a high stool for support, but their feet still touch the ground.

Para-Archery at the Paralympics

Para-archery has been a core sport at the Paralympic Games since they began in 1960. The number of events has changed over the years. In the first Games in 1960, there were 8 events. This grew to 18 events in 1976 and 1984. More recently, there have been 9 events in each Games since 2008.

Many different countries have done well in Para-archery. The United States was very strong in the early years. Later, countries like France, West Germany, South Korea, and China also became top performers. Great Britain has also had many successes.
