What is the Arctic Bramble Like?

The Arctic bramble usually grows in acidic soils. These soils are rich in decaying plants and other natural materials. It is a perennial plant, meaning it lives for more than two years. It does not have thorns.

Size and Appearance

This plant can grow up to 30 centimetres (12 inches) tall. Its base is woody, but the parts above the ground are very thin. The flowers grow in small groups of one to three. Their petals can be pink, red, or a bright magenta color.

The fruit of the Arctic bramble is deep red or dark purple. These berries are very special because they are incredibly tough. They can handle frost and very cold weather conditions without getting damaged.

Where Does the Arctic Bramble Grow?

This plant is found in many northern parts of the world. You can see it growing in places like Alaska and northern Scandinavia. It also grows in Finland, Russia, Poland, and Belarus.

It is found in Mongolia, northeastern China, and North Korea. In Europe, it grows in Estonia and Lithuania. Across North America, it is found in Canada and the northern United States. In the US, it grows as far south as Oregon, Colorado, Michigan, and Maine.

How Are Arctic Bramble Berries Used?

The berries from the Arctic bramble are known for being very tasty. People use them in many ways. They are often made into delicious jam or used to flavor tea. Sometimes, they are even used in special drinks.

A Royal Berry

The famous scientist Carl Linnaeus thought the Arctic raspberry was a great treat. In Swedish, it is called åkerbär. In the Pacific Northwest of Canada and the US, it is sometimes called nagoonberry. This name comes from the Tlingit word neigóon.

The quality of its fruit is so high that its Russian name, knyazhenika, means "berry of princes." This shows how much people value its flavor!

The Arctic raspberry is an important plant in northern Sweden. It is the official provincial plant of the Norrbotten province.
