Ardverikie House is a beautiful old house built in the 1800s. It's located in the Scottish Highlands, near Newtonmore. The house is famous for its unique Scottish baronial style, which makes it look like a grand castle! Many people know Ardverikie House because it was used as the fictional Glenbogle Estate in the popular BBC TV show Monarch of the Glen.
The Story of Ardverikie House
The land where Ardverikie House stands used to belong to the Clan Macpherson. In 1844, a very important person named The 2nd Marquess of Abercorn rented the land. He was very keen on deer stalking (hunting deer) in Scotland. The Marquess made the original hunting lodge bigger.
A few years later, in 1847, Queen Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert, even stayed at Ardverikie for three weeks!
In 1860, another hunting fan, Lord Henry Bentinck, took over the lease. He lived there until he passed away in 1870.
A wealthy man named Sir John Ramsden bought the Ardverikie lands in 1871 for a lot of money – £107,500 (equivalent to £7,170,508 in 2021). Sadly, in 1873, the house was destroyed by a fire. But Sir John quickly had it rebuilt! From 1874 to 1878, a new, grander house was built. It was designed by the architect John Rhind in the popular Scottish baronial style.
After Sir John Ramsden died in 1914, his son, Sir John Frecheville Ramsden, inherited the estate. Over time, much of the land was sold off. In 1956, Sir John transferred Ardverikie Estate to a family company. This company, Ardverikie Estate Limited, still owns and looks after the estate today. They rent out cottages and host weddings, keeping the historic house alive.
