History of Aredale
The town of Aredale began because of cheese! In the 1860s, more and more people started settling in the area. By 1890, local dairy farmers worked together to build a cheese-making factory. This factory helped the town grow enough to get its own post office and become an official township.
How Aredale Got Its Name
The name Aredale comes from a town in Pennsylvania called Airville. Many of Aredale's first residents moved from there. The town's official map, called a plat, was recorded on June 28, 1900. This date was later celebrated as "Field Day" by the residents. The celebration included a town party and a baseball game, which brought hundreds of people from nearby towns to Aredale.
Early Buildings and Changes
Soon after it was founded, Aredale had several lumberyards and stockyards. The Aredale Savings and Loan bank was built in 1901. In the same year, the First Methodist Church was started. They bought the Coldwater Methodist Church building and moved it into town. Sadly, this church building was destroyed by fire in 1923, but a new one was built to replace it.
In 1953, a train accident destroyed the town's train station. A new station was never built.
A Young Mayor and TV Fame
On November 8, 2011, something unusual happened in Aredale's election for mayor. Jeremy Minnier, an 18-year-old senior at Hampton–Dumont High School, won the election! He received 24 write-in votes, beating the current mayor, Virgil Homer, who got eight votes.
In April 2012, Mayor Jeremy Minnier even appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He talked about what life was like in the small town and showed pictures. The host, Jay Leno, and his guest, Mel Gibson, gave Mayor Minnier a new town sign as a gift.
