Arenalejos is a small community, or "barrio," located in the town of Arecibo, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 3,064 people lived there. It's located near the center of Arecibo, just west of another area called Miraflores.
A Look Back: History of Arenalejos
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the U.S.
In 1899, the U.S. government took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that 1,228 people lived in Arenalejos barrio at that time.
