A Look at Arenales' Past
Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War in 1898. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the U.S.
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that the combined population of two areas, Aguacate barrio and Arenales barrio, was 991 people.
